Students speak up for
Rotary Public Speaking Competition
Two teams of public speakers have returned
to RGS victorious after winning the senior and intermediate
categories of the Reigate Rotary Club’s Public Speaking
Competition. The contest, run as part of the Rotary’s
national challenge, saw local schools compete to win the
district competition.
The senior team members, William Sargent, Michael Bass and
Ingram Davidson, were amongst the youngest group to compete
in the Senior category, with all RGS team members currently
in Year 10. Their speech, Sixteen year-olds should have the
vote, saw them win through against Sixth Formers from other
local schools to bring the Rotary shield proudly back to
RGS.
Emily Dixon, Elanor Bond and Lydia Bass combined to form
the winning Iintermediate team who spoke on the subject of
Fascinating Phobias. The girls’ win saw them bring
the Rotary’s historic competition mace back to school
after an absence of two years.
Commenting on the students’ performance and success,
Jonathan Worthen, the English teacher responsible for the
two teams, said: “Both teams had practised very hard
and they produced excellent performances on the night. I
am delighted with all six pupils and I hope to see them continue
to exercise their public speaking talent as they rise up
the school.”
The Intermediate team is now preparing to compete against
a wider selection of schools at the next round of the Rotary
Public Speaking Competition, to be held in Lewes later in
the month.
