Student Brings Home Gold from UK Biology Olympiad

Gold and bronze medals have been awarded to Reigate Grammar School students taking part in the 12th British Biology Olympiad. Sixth form scientist Emma Eldridge was one of only 69 UK students to be awarded the highest accolade in the competition which receives around 1,500 entries in total. RGS student Keval Patel collected a bronze medal and fellow biologist Roshni Mistry a highly commended award.

The science challenge, organised by the Institute of Biology, aims to challenge and stimulate gifted students with an interest in Biology to expand and extend their talents. The competition covers a wider syllabus than A-level, and allows gifted students to demonstrate their knowledge. The team from RGS began with two theory papers covering every area of the subject from cell biology to genetics and evolution.

Commented Dr Sarah Lawson, Head of Biology:”I am extremely proud of our team’s success in the Biology Olympiad who together achieved a fantastic set of results for RGS in this tough competition. I know the whole team have worked hard and enjoyed the challenge that the Olympiad presented.”

The winning students will now take part in a lecture give by British Biology Olympiad President and neurobiologist, Professor Colin Blakemore to be held at Imperial College London.
