The
School Scout Group, founded in 1954, had to cease activities in 1996.
This was because Robin Bligh had retired,
and Peter Dobson ( who had taken over as Scout Leader ) moved to Cumbria.
No other member of the Teaching Staff was able or willing to step in.
After about four years, there seemed no likelihood of the Group re-starting,
so our camping equipment was given away, - to Peter Wheatley’s Group
in Wiltshire, and to local Reigate groups. Our Mirror dinghies were sold
to a Sea Scout Group in Devon, and many of our canoes ( with their trailer
) were sold to Radley College, where they would also be used by a charitable
youth service. Our funds were variously disposed of to the RNLI, Mountain
Rescue groups, Westnell Nurseries ( which Mark Patchett helps, in Lima
), 7th Horley Scout Group ( building new HQ after a fire ), and Tim Formoy’s
Scout Group in Hertfordshire.
We have kept the News-Sheet going, with the above news as well as personal
news from Old Scouts of the Group. Future News-Sheets ( from October 2004
) will be posted on this web-site, as well as sent by snail-mail to those
without Internet access. We hope those who like to keep the News-Sheets
filed away, will be able to download hard copy. Currently we are in touch
with 125 by e-mail and 34 by post. We have addresses for about 60 more
Old Scouts who have not asked to receive regular news. There must be at
least 150 others, and we hope any who come across this web-page, and would
like to be kept informed, will e-mail robin@reigategrammar.org.
Among those 150 were the following, who were very keen Scouts, but with
whom we have lost touch. Can they, or anyone else, tell us where they are
?
John Baldry, Rodney Forton, Martin Leathwood, Bobby Tucker,
Richard Bannister, Drew Hoggatt, Roy Monk, Alistair Tweedale,
Chris Bunkell, Anthony Horton, Tom Perryman, Tim Viney,
Dougie Finlayson, Neil Kearns, Richard Potter, Nick Walsh,
John Woodhouse, Alex Wright, -- and others.
We have continued to hold Reunions every five years, the last one celebrating
our ‘Golden Jubilee’ in February 2004. An account of
this was written by Tom Lockett for News-Sheet No 194, April 2004.
