Harlequin Theatre Instrumental Concert
The Harlequin Theatre Instrumental Concert took place on 23 November and featured RGS orchestras, bands and soloists performing a varied musical programme. The Concert Band opened the evening’s entertainment and their performance included a toe-tapping rendition of Uptown Funk. The next large group to perform was CB2 who choreographed the opening of their energetic arrangement of The Great Escape, featuring First Formers Isobel R (clarinet) and Zachary S (flute) as well as rising-star trombonist Lakith G.The Swing Band took their customary spot in the programme, sending the audience into the interval with stylish and diverse playing, showcasing a number of members of the very strong Upper Sixth Form cohort.
The second half of the concert featured ISO performing beautiful classical string arrangements and the Symphony Orchestra playing a selection of dance-themed pieces, including brief highlights of the familiar ballet classics Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet and The Nutcracker.
In between these large ensemble performances, soloists Bernadette CW (Third Form) and Lauren C (Fifth Form) captivated the audience with compelling Haydn on the trumpet, and intimate Villa-Lobos on classical guitar, respectively. Jack R (Fifth Form) and Estuardo DA (Third Form) also combined to perform an impressive electric guitar improvisation.
Throughout the evening, the students excelled themselves, rising to the occasion once again and producing thoroughly entertaining music-making. Conductors Nick Lobb, Richard Hare and Toby Carden were very ably supported by all the Music Department staff. We look forward to the next ensemble performances for many of these musicians in the Spring Term.
