RGS athletes splash and dash to top spots in Surrey competitions

RGS won one gold, four silver, and three bronze medals and came first in the girls ‘inter’ category of years 9 and 10 in last weekend’s Surrey Schools Gala – a county-wide swimming competition at Guildford’s Spectrum. The result means RGS was the top co-educational school for girls swimming overall in the county!

The eight medallists were:

  • Gold – Toby S, 100m backstroke (years 9 and 10)
  • Silver – Daisy G, 100m backstroke (years 9 and 10), Issy H, 200m individual medley (years 9 and 10), Owen K, 100 m breaststroke (years 11-13),
  • Tomos K, 200m individual medley (years 9 and 10)
  • Bronze – Katie D – 200m individual medley (years 11 -13), Eva M – 100 m freestyle (years 7 and 8), Elis K – 100m breaststroke (years 7 and 8)

Earlier the same day, Lucy D became the year 7 champion at the Surrey Schools Cross Country Championships and will go on to represent Surrey in an Inter Counties match in a few weeks. Oscar S won the seniors race (years 12 and 13) and Lucy B came third in the ‘inters’ category (years 10 and 11) securing them both automatic qualification for the English Schools Cross Country Championships in March.

Phil Mann, Director of Sport at RGS said:

‘We had a fantastic day in the pool and on the field on Saturday and I am immensely proud of all our students especially as the standard of both competitions was incredibly strong.”

Headmaster, Shaun Fenton, added:

“I am delighted with the amazing results from the gala and cross country – it really was a ‘Super Sport Saturday’. Some 27 swimmers and 13 runners competed this weekend – five of which took part in both events demonstrating stamina and commitment.”
