40 RGS hockey players selected to represent the county, region and England
40 RGS hockey players will be representing their county, region or country in the under 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 age groups this year. The students have had to undergo a series of selection days at weekends and in the school holidays against stiff competition to win their places in the squads.
Peggy W, who joined RGS in Year 9 to take advantage of the progressive RGS hockey programme, was initially selected to play for the county and progressed from there to the Performance Centre. She was nominated for the Futures Cup Competition where she caught the attention of the England selectors and was selected for the England Hockey National Age Groups (NAGs) programme. During the October half-term holiday she attended the England Hockey camp at Lillishall National Sports Centre and was selected into the 26 player England Under 16 squad.
Head of Hockey, Mrs Wickham is so proud of the students.
They have embraced the RGS Hockey programme developed by our Performance Director, Mr Chris Bowen. It is wonderful to see them being recognised and particular congratulations to Peggy. Selection for England at the Under 16 level is a fantastic achievement.
Chris Bowen, Hockey Performance Director said
The RGS Hockey Programme has been carefully designed to allow RGS pupils to develop their hockey technically, physically, emotionally and mentally within a busy school lifestyle. To see our pupils excel within this environment is incredible and their selections are richly deserved.
Headmaster, Shaun Fenton said,
I see how hard the players train in all weathers and their enthusiasm during matches. This dedication has paid off and their recognition is well deserved. Future hockey stars in the making!
