Sports Day 2025: A Day of Records
Written by Lea Gayral, RGS Lower Sixth student
Sunshine, smoke bombs and the excited sound of the cheering students – the Reigate Grammar Sports Day 2025 had it all, and then some. It was a record-breaking, dinosaur racing, Zumba dancing celebration of sport, spirit and sheer determination. With every student taking part, Mr Fenton summed it up perfectly: “Today sport and house spirit is the winner. There are people just taking part and dragging themselves around, winning points for their house which makes such a big difference, so everyone is a winner today.”
Let’s start with some of the jaw-dropping performances of the day in athletics. Gracie S dashed through the 1st form girls 800m with a time of 2 minutes and 25 seconds, shaving a cool 4 seconds off of the previous record set in 2015. Isaac A came straight after with a new 1st form boys record for the 800m with a time of 2 minutes and 24 seconds, beating an almost 40-year record set in 1986! Florence T in the 3rd form also came with a fiery determination for the 800m, achieving a time of 2 minutes and 25 seconds, taking off 2 seconds from the record set in 2013. Heather K stormed the 4th form girls’ 300m with a time of 43.11s, smashing the 2018 record by over 4 seconds.
Bella H equalled a record of 1.30m with style and grace in the high jump. Michael M from the 4th form launched himself 6.66 metres in the long jump, beating a record from 1991 by a massive 65cm! Michael is no stranger to the spotlight as he still holds the year 4, 5 and 6 records from his time at RSM as well as working through smashing the records at RGS. Michael is also currently ranked number one in the country for long jump in his age group!
The legendary 8x50m relay – a totally RGS original event – got 24 pupils running short bursts for house points. And the newest addition to the RGS sporting day – the dinosaur mascot race – was an instant crowd favourite, with everyone cheering on their heads of houses.
A huge thank you to all the incredible participants, the Lower 6th BTEC students for their help behind the scenes, our ever-enthusiastic staff (with a special shout-out to the amazing Mrs Browning for organising) and the fantastic supporters who brought the cheer, the energy and the smiles. You made Sports Day 2025 unforgettable.
