Drama

Extra-curricular drama is a great strength of the school, with a busy programme of theatre events each term.

There are usually three or four productions each year, in addition to evening showings of examination pieces. There are strong links with the music department with a musical staged biennially. Productions in the last four years have included: a 1970’s inspired performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, West Side Story, The Tempest, The Dumb Waiter, Hamlet, Comedy of Errors, Nicholas Nickleby Parts I and II, Anything Goes, Seussical, the Musical, The Producers, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Winter’s Tale, Animal Farm, Daisy Pulls it off, Aladdin, Coram Boy, Abigail’s Party, Annie and most recently Sweeney Todd.

For up to date information on forthcoming productions, drama groups and activities please visit the dedicated Drama & Theatre Arts website.

There are frequent visits to local and national theatres (over twenty-five in the past year) and visits by practitioners and touring theatre companies are welcomed. The subject can also be studied at GCSE and A Level. There are drama and dance clubs for various year groups and opportunities to be trained in all areas of technical theatre.

The department regularly attends the National Student Drama Festival in Scarborough with previous attendances gaining awards including a student-directed production of Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter which won a new award Enterprise, created in response to Will Edward’s production and performance.

The Department is housed in a specially designed studio workshop with new sound and lighting systems. The studio space is used for examination performances, whilst main school productions take place in the Concert Hall – a versatile performance area that can be adapted to accommodate large-scale musicals or smaller studio-style productions.

Headmaster’s Scholarships are available for Drama for children entering the School at 11+, 13+ and 16+. They carry a reduction in fees of up to 30% of fees. More information is available on our Scholarships page.
