RGS Digital: Technology with Purpose

Our RGS Digital programme supports students with thoughtful, age-appropriate use of digital tools that help them stay organised, collaborate, think independently  and thrive in today’s connected world.

When your child joins RGS in First Form (Year 7), they become part of a digital learning journey that blends innovation with tradition. Devices never replace teachers, books or pens, but they sit alongside them as a powerful tool when it is the right time to use them.

Why Technology Matters at RGS

Our digital strategy is designed to:

  • Personalise learning so students can work at their own pace
  • Improve organisation and access to lesson resources
  • Provide rich, ongoing feedback between pupils and teachers
  • Help children develop the digital skills they need for life and future study
  • Promote safe, responsible and balanced use of technology

Through this approach, students learn when to use technology, how to use it safely, and when it is better to reach for pen and paper.

A Device for Every Pupil

From September of Year 7, all students are invited to take part in our one-to-one device programme, choosing from two Microsoft Surface models supplied through the school:

Surface Go 3Surface Pro 9
Lightweight and CompactMore Powerful, with a Longer Lifespan

These devices are offered via flexible purchase or rental options, and come fully set up with stylus, keyboard, protective case, extended warranty, and insurance.

Students who already own a suitable laptop may bring it, provided it meets school requirements.

Digital Learning in the Classroom

Our staff use digital tools thoughtfully and selectively to:

  • Share resources via Microsoft Teams and OneNote
  • Guide students through independent tasks at their own pace
  • Provide feedback through typed notes, audio recordings, and shared annotations
  • Support neurodiverse learners and those who benefit from differentiated resources

Despite the use of devices, exercise books remain a vital part of school life. Students are encouraged to develop good handwriting, take notes by hand, and use the best tool for the task at hand. Mobile phones are not required for learning.

Safe and Supported – On Screen and Off

Keeping children safe online is a top priority. All students receive regular digital safety education through PSHEE and form time, and every device on the school network is protected by robust filtering systems. Devices from the school scheme are also monitored by cloud-based safety filters when used at home.

Parents are encouraged to stay involved, and we are always happy to discuss home use, screen time balance, or set-up options. Students can also access a daily IT Helpdesk at school if they need any support with their device.

Technology That Grows With Your Child

The device your child starts with in Year 7 can grow with them throughout their school journey, used for everything from science experiments to essay writing, coding projects, and creative arts. When appropriate, it can even be used in exams as a student’s normal way of working.

Every student also receives:

  • An Office 365 subscription
  • Touch-typing support
  • Access to specialist software like Adobe Photoshop where needed
  • Help with repairs, insurance and replacement devices if they are using the school scheme

 A Balanced Approach

We understand parents may have concerns about screen time. That's why RGS Digital is always about balance. Your child will still read physical books, write by hand, take part in drama productions, play team sports, and enjoy the full range of school life. The laptop is simply one more tool, used when it makes learning more engaging, effective or inclusive.
