Whether your child is an experienced musician or just beginning their journey, they will find a welcoming and vibrant community here.
We are proud of our strong musical tradition and the inclusive approach that sits at its heart. From orchestras and rock bands to choirs, swing groups and chamber ensembles, there is something for every musical interest and ability. Music at RGS is about enjoyment, growth and expression, and we actively encourage students to explore their potential in a supportive and stimulating environment.
Growing Through Music
Co-Curricular Music
Students are encouraged to take part in one or more of the many ensembles on offer. Performing with others builds confidence and camaraderie, and above all, it’s fun.
Groups include:
- Orchestra and string ensemble
- Concert bands and swing band
- Six choirs
- Guitar, percussion, wind and brass ensembles
- Chamber groups and rock bands
These groups perform at regular concerts throughout the year, both in school and in the wider community. Students also contribute to assemblies and special events – music is woven into the rhythm of everyday life at RGS.
Individual Tuition
In addition to classroom music, we offer individual tuition in a wide range of instruments and voice. Lessons are timetabled to minimise disruption to academic work and are available for any student who wishes to learn.

The RGS Saturday Music College
Open to young musicians from across the region, the RGS Saturday Music College offers a wide-reaching programme for 7-18 year olds. With individual lessons, chamber music, composition and musicianship classes – plus regular concerts and expert masterclasses – it’s a dynamic and welcoming place for students to grow their talents.
Scholarships and Choral Awards
Music scholarships are available at 11+, 13+ and 16+ entry points. These awards are designed to support and nurture talented musicians, offering additional opportunities to perform and develop.
We also offer choral awards through the RGS Godfrey Searle Choir, a special opportunity for exceptional young singers aged 7-15. Choristers rehearse and perform regularly, enjoying cathedral tours and prestigious events, from services at St Paul’s Cathedral to international performances. They receive outstanding vocal training and become part of a unique musical tradition at RGS.
