In the Lower School, we celebrate individuality and work hard to create an environment where every child can flourish academically, socially and emotionally.
Our personalised approach to Learning Support is based on a deep understanding that each child is unique. Whether a student needs a little extra help with organisation, targeted support in literacy, or strategies for managing attention or anxiety, our experienced team is here to help.
A Tailored, Nurturing Approach
We take time to get to know each student as an individual. From the very start of First Form, we assess and respond to their needs gently, thoughtfully and with care. Some children benefit from:
- In-class support to help with routines, transitions and understanding lesson content
- Small group sessions to develop key skills such as touch typing, social communication and organisation
- 1:1 sessions to teach and practise specific strategies that can be applied across the curriculum
We support pupils with a wide range of needs including dyslexia, autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences and more. Provision is always tailored, flexible and based on what works best for each student.

Facilities and Resources
Learning Support is based in a dedicated space within our Wellbeing Centre, creating a calm, specialist environment away from the busy classroom. The building includes a suite of IT-equipped rooms, reading pens, spelling and typing programmes, colour overlays, and voice-to-text software such as Dragon Speak.
There is also The Snug, a peaceful room where students can take time out if they are feeling overwhelmed. This quiet space is a vital part of our inclusive and compassionate approach.
We are proud to see our students develop into confident young people who understand their areas of difficulty and know how to use and develop strategies to allow them to make the most of their abilities.
Building Confidence, Understanding and Independence
Our goal is to help children become independent, self-aware learners. We don’t just support them with tasks, we help them understand how they learn, build self-esteem, and feel proud of their progress. We also work closely with the pastoral and academic teams, so support is joined-up, consistent and holistic.
For students with additional needs, we offer exam access arrangements such as extra time, use of a reader, or rest breaks and always based on individual need and assessment.

Staff Expertise and Ongoing Development
Our Learning Support team includes three specialist teachers, one with primary training to ensure smooth transitions from prep or primary school. All staff receive ongoing training in neurodiverse teaching strategies, and whole-school INSET days are dedicated to improving provision for students with SEND.
Teachers across the school use verbal, visual and kinaesthetic teaching methods to support a range of learners. More than just strategies, our team models empathy, clarity and positive encouragement in every interaction.
Partnership with Parents
We believe in working in close partnership with families. We offer regular parent workshops and open conversations to ensure that support extends beyond school and that families feel empowered and informed on their child’s journey.

Celebrating Neurodiversity
RGS is a school that celebrates difference. During our annual Neurodiversity Week, students take part in immersive experiences that help them understand what it might feel like to have a specific learning difficulty.
Through understanding, encouragement and thoughtful teaching, we help every student in the Lower School feel proud, supported, and confident in their ability to succeed.
