We believe that with time, space and the right support, students can do more than simply succeed, they can flourish.

Our students begin GCSE study in the Third Form (Year 9), a year earlier than most schools. This allows them to explore subjects in greater depth and breadth, building confidence and reducing the pressure of a two-year sprint. It also gives more time for reflection, review and refinement of subject choices, ensuring that every student follows a bespoke path built around their interests, abilities and aspirations.

Stretch, curiosity and time to do it well

Required Subjects

Most students take ten GCSEs, including:

  • English Language
  • English Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

In Maths, students are grouped by ability, with the most advanced students offered Further Maths as an additional qualification.

Optional Classes

Students then select from a wide range of options in:

  • The Humanities
  • Languages
  • Arts
  • Technology
  • Social Sciences.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach — each student is guided by expert staff to build a programme that suits their goals, closely advised by the Careers Department.

Empowering Students to Think, Create, and Lead

At RGS, we don’t just teach students what to learn — we teach them how to think. Through our membership of the international High Performance Learning programme, students develop powerful cognitive habits and learning behaviours. They learn how to analyse, create, connect and reflect, building intellectual confidence, creative problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in a changing world.

This philosophy underpins every subject, and it empowers students to become truly future ready — able to meet academic challenges, but also to lead, adapt and grow with purpose and passion.

The Electives Programme

Our innovative Electives Programme is a key feature of the Upper School. These short, modular courses give students the opportunity to follow their interests, try something new, or develop practical life skills — all without the pressure of exams.

This rich variety keeps learning joyful and relevant, helping students feel engaged, confident, and excited about their journey.

  • Entrepreneurship or charity leadership
  • Photography, Film appreciation or animation
  • A New Language
  • Clay Modelling or Digital Creativity
  • Forensic Psychology, Global Politics, or Public Speaking

Informed and Future Ready

We help students become the architects of their own journey.

With PSHEE and weekly PE also part of the programme, students emerge from the Upper School not only with great results, but as well-rounded, informed and future ready individuals equipped for Sixth Form and beyond.
