Shaun Fenton

Shaun Fenton OBE is a distinguished educational leader, deeply committed to the transformative power of education. Since joining Reigate Grammar School (RGS) in 2012, he has championed a student-first approach, ensuring that every child is known, supported, and empowered to achieve beyond their expectations. His leadership philosophy is rooted in optimism, belief in young people, and a dedication to pastoral care, creating an environment where students flourish both academically and personally.

Under his leadership, RGS has been recognised for exceptional pastoral care and winning multiple national awards. RGS was named School of the Year by Education Today in 2024, and shortlisted for Headmaster of the Year. In 2025, RGS was awarded Independent School of the Year by The Sunday Times and shortlisted for the School of the Year award by TES. These accolades highlight Shaun’s visionary leadership and the school’s continued excellence.

For five consecutive years, Reigate Grammar School has been named the top co-educational day school in Surrey by The Telegraph and The Sunday Times, and it was judged to be “Excellent" by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in 2023.

Before RGS, Shaun held headships at Pate’s Grammar School, Cheltenham and Sir John Lawes School, Hertfordshire. His experience spans both independent and state sectors, reinforcing his conviction that education should open doors of opportunity for all.

Shaun’s academic journey began at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, followed by Keble College, Oxford, where he earned an MA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He later pursued a PGCE and a Master of Education in School Leadership, alongside the National Professional Qualification for Headship.

Beyond RGS, Shaun has contributed significantly to the broader educational landscape. He has served on the board of AQA, been a National Leader of Education, and held leadership positions within HMC (Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference), including Chair in 2018–2019.

In 2020, Shaun was honoured with an OBE for Services to Education, recognising his enduring impact on young people and the wider educational community.

Shaun’s passion for education is matched by his love for sport, drama, and music, reflecting his belief in a well-rounded, enriching school experience. At RGS, he leads a culture of positivity, respect, and intellectual freedom, where students are encouraged to thrive and succeed.
